Ingredients

For the Sloppy Joe Mixture
  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • ½ cup yellow onion, diced
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic Fresh garlic = bigger flavor.
  • 15 ounces tomato sauce
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon mustard
  • 2 teaspoons beef bouillon powder
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • to taste Salt
  • to taste Pepper
For Assembly
  • Cheese slices Medium cheddar works well for gooey melt.
  • Texas toast bread Sturdy with extra-crispy edges.
  • Mayonnaise Lightly spread on bread for browning.

Method

Preparation
  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high.
  2. Add diced onion and ground beef, seasoning with beef bouillon powder, salt, and pepper.
  3. Cook, stirring and breaking up the meat until it no longer looks pink.
  4. Add minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  5. Drain off excess grease while ensuring the meat remains moist.
  6. Stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, mustard, and brown sugar, mixing until uniform.
  7. Lower heat to low-medium and let the sauce simmer for about 8-10 minutes.
Cooking
  1. Heat a separate skillet over medium.
  2. Spread mayonnaise on one side of each slice of bread and place them mayo-side down in the pan.
  3. Assemble on the bread in the skillet: one slice of cheese, a scoop of the sloppy joe mixture, another slice of cheese, then top with the second slice of bread mayo side up.
  4. Press gently and cook until golden, then flip and cook the other side until the cheese is melted and both sides are deep golden.
  5. Serve hot.

Notes

Tip: If the bread browns too fast, lower the heat and cover briefly to melt cheese without burning.
