Ingredients

For the Hamburger Steaks
  • 1 lb Ground beef (80/20) Use fresh ground beef for the best taste.
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Black pepper
  • 1 tsp Garlic powder
  • 1 tsp Onion powder
For the Gravy
  • 2 medium Onions, sliced Sweet onions work best.
  • 1 cup Beef broth Use low-sodium for better control over seasoning.
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce Adds umami flavor.
  • 2 tbsp Flour For thickening the gravy.
  • 1 tbsp Butter Use if needed for caramelizing onions.
  • 1 splash Milk or cream Optional to enrich the gravy.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a bowl, combine the ground beef with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Optionally, blend in an egg and breadcrumbs.
  2. Shape the mixture into patties about 3/4 inch thick, pressing a small dent in the center of each.
Cooking
  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat with a little oil. Cook the patties for about 3 to 4 minutes per side until browned. Remove from skillet and set aside.
  2. In the same skillet, add butter if needed and reduce heat to medium. Add sliced onions with a pinch of salt and cook for about 8 to 12 minutes until softened and golden.
  3. Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir for about a minute. Gradually add beef broth while stirring, then add Worcestershire sauce. Let simmer until thickened. Add a splash of milk or cream if desired.
  4. Return the patties to the skillet with any juices. Spoon gravy over them, cover loosely, and simmer for 8 to 10 minutes until fully cooked and tender.

Notes

For best results, don't overcrowd the pan when browning the patties. Bring beef to room temperature for even cooking, and make extra gravy for pairing with mashed potatoes or bread.
