  • 4 large large potatoes (russet or Yukon gold) Use russet or Yukon gold for the best texture.
  • 2 cups shredded cheese (sharp cheddar recommended) Feel free to experiment with your favorite varieties.
  • 1 cup heavy cream Adds richness; don’t substitute with milk alone.
  • 1 cup milk Mix with cream for balanced richness.
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour Essential for thickening the cheese sauce.
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder Elevates the flavor profile.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a medium saucepan, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat.
  3. Stir in 2 tablespoons of flour to create a roux, cooking for 1-2 minutes until bubbly.
  4. Gradually whisk in 1 cup of heavy cream and 1 cup of milk, cooking until the sauce thickens.
  5. Once thickened, add 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, salt, and pepper to taste, followed by half of the shredded cheese. Mix until melted and well combined.
Layering
  1. In a greased 9x13 baking dish, place half of the thinly sliced potatoes in an even layer.
  2. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes. Repeat with remaining potatoes and cheese sauce.
  3. Sprinkle remaining cheese over the top for a golden, bubbly finish.
Baking
  1. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  2. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
  3. Allow to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

For best results, use fresh potatoes without blemishes and ensure even slicing. Add chopped parsley for garnish if desired.
