Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a medium saucepan, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat.
- Stir in 2 tablespoons of flour to create a roux, cooking for 1-2 minutes until bubbly.
- Gradually whisk in 1 cup of heavy cream and 1 cup of milk, cooking until the sauce thickens.
- Once thickened, add 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, salt, and pepper to taste, followed by half of the shredded cheese. Mix until melted and well combined.
Layering
- In a greased 9x13 baking dish, place half of the thinly sliced potatoes in an even layer.
- Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes. Repeat with remaining potatoes and cheese sauce.
- Sprinkle remaining cheese over the top for a golden, bubbly finish.
Baking
- Cover the dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
- Allow to cool slightly before serving.
Notes
For best results, use fresh potatoes without blemishes and ensure even slicing. Add chopped parsley for garnish if desired.
