  • 15 oz Ricotta cheese Adds creaminess and richness.
  • 24 oz Marinara sauce A good-quality sauce enhances the flavor; homemade is ideal.
  • 1 lb Italian sausage Adds a savory depth; optional for vegetarian version.
  • 3 cloves Fresh garlic Always use fresh garlic for better flavor.
  • 1 egg Egg Helps bind the ricotta mixture.
  • 1 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 2 cups Mozzarella cheese, shredded Reserve some for topping.
  • to taste Salt and pepper Adjust according to preference.
  • optional Herbs (thyme, basil, etc.) Add to the ricotta mixture for extra flavor.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Boil ziti in a large pot of salted water for about 7-8 minutes until just al dente. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a skillet, heat olive oil and cook the Italian sausage over medium heat until browned, adding diced onion and minced garlic for the last minute.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix ricotta, egg, Parmesan, a handful of mozzarella, salt, pepper, and any desired herbs.
Assembly and Baking
  1. Spread a thin layer of marinara sauce in a 9x13 inch baking dish. Layer half of the pasta, followed by half of the ricotta mixture, and more sauce. Repeat this until finished, ending with sauce on top.
  2. Cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes.
  3. Remove the foil, add extra mozzarella cheese, and bake for another 10-15 minutes until everything is bubbly and golden.
  4. Allow the baked ziti to set for 10 minutes before slicing.

Notes

Make extra sauce for drizzling on top before serving or as a side dish. You can assemble the dish a day in advance and refrigerate before baking.
